Brookfield Asset Management, Qai, Qatar’s AI company, and a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), announced a strategic partnership to establish a $20 billion joint venture focusing on artificial intelligence infrastructure in Qatar and select international markets. The $20 billion joint venture is expected to play a key role in supporting Qatar’s ambition to become a leading hub for AI services and infrastructure in the Middle East.

The reasons behind this

Artificial Intelligence, especially large-scale machine learning and generative AI, is expanding in demand for high-performance computing, energy, and integrated digital infrastructure. According to the report, $5.2 trillion in data center and its related infrastructure investments will be needed by 2030 to support the global AI ecosystem.

The new joint venture positions Qatar at the forefront of Middle East AI development as a viable alternative to traditional tech hubs in the United States and China.

Qatar’s national AI ambitions

Qatar has been investing in technology and innovation as a part of its broader economic goals, aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The Qatar government founded Qai, a subsidiary of QIA, to drive AI-related investments and strategic partnerships with Brookfield.

The joint venture will build integrated AI facilities across Qatar and will establish high-performance compute centers (HPC) deploying advanced AI models. This joint venture will expand access to secure, trusted AI technologies across the critical sectors. It will also explore expansion into the selected global markets beyond the Middle East.

Brookfield’s key role

This venture deepens its strategic pivot into AI infrastructure, a main theme of its newly launched Brookfield Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Fund (BAIIF). This fund aims to mobilize up to $100 billion toward global AI infrastructure investments in data centers and integrated compute hubs.

According to the CEO of Brookfield, Bruce Flatt, the partnership will combine Qatar’s strategic vision with Brookfield’s operational expertise in developing large-scale infrastructure, creating a platform to support the responsible deployment of advanced AI technologies.

From Doha to the world

While Qatar is the strategic partner, Brookfield and Qai also aim to explore opportunities beyond the Gulf state’s borders. The joint venture will offer regional compute alternatives outside the U.S. and Europe. This venture will also support international cloud providers seeking sovereign infrastructure.

QIA officials highlighted the key benefits of the partnership, such as, economic diversification, skill development, and regional leadership.

This partnership will broaden Qatar’s economic base by creating high-value jobs and boosting the tech ecosystem. It will also expand the AI research and opportunities for local and foreign talent to work on computing technologies. It will position Qatar alongside other Middle Eastern AI players such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia.
